S3E17: Homer at the Bat
Burns hires Major League ringers for the plant softball championship.
Episode Ending
In the episode "Homer at the Bat" from season 3 of "The Simpsons," Mr. Burns decides to form a company softball team, confident they can win the championship. Naturally, he can't leave things to chance and hires a bunch of professional baseball players as ringers to ensure victory. It’s not exactly a level playing field, but hey, it's Springfield. As the big game approaches, a series of bizarre mishaps befall the hired athletes. Ken Griffey Jr. ends up with gigantism from overdosing on nerve tonic, Roger Clemens believes he's a chicken due to a hypnotist gone awry, and Ozzie Smith disappears into the Springfield Mystery Spot. You get the idea — everything that could go wrong does. In the end, it’s up to the regular power plant employees to step up. Despite their lack of professional skill, Homer ends up being the unlikely hero when his head is hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, winning the game for Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. Mr. Burns’ scheme to cheat his way to victory results in an actual victory, albeit in the most roundabout way possible.
