S6E14: Bart's Comet

In "The Simpsons" Season 6, Episode 14, titled "Bart's Comet," things start off with Bart pulling a prank on Principal Skinner that inadvertently leads to him discovering a comet. This little scientific achievement earns him a place in the Springfield Observatory, but it soon turns ominous when they realize the comet is on a collision course with Springfield. As the town scrambles to respond, everyone ends up in Flanders' bomb shelter. Naturally, it quickly becomes overcrowded, and the townspeople have to decide who stays and who goes. In a rare moment of unity, they all choose to leave together, facing their impending doom head-on. As they gather outside, ready to meet their fate, the comet miraculously breaks up in the atmosphere. Only a small piece lands on and destroys the only structure that could withstand a disaster: The Leftorium. In typical Springfield fashion, life goes back to normal — panic averted by sheer luck and Flanders left with one less storefront.
