S9E19: Simpson Tide
When Homer joins the Naval Reserve, a captain takes a liking to him and leaves him in charge of a nuclear submarine.
Episode Ending
In "The Simpsons" Season 9, Episode 19, titled "Simpson Tide," Homer joins the Naval Reserve after being fired from the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant for causing a meltdown. In classic Homer style, he quickly finds himself in over his head when he accidentally launches a torpedo at a Soviet submarine during a naval exercise. As you might expect, this mishap nearly sparks an international incident, with Russia comically reverting to its Soviet Union state. Homer's blunder makes him the captain of the submarine, and his crew ends up getting captured by the Russians. However, in a stroke of luck, Homer manages to escape and is eventually rescued by an American vessel. In the end, despite nearly starting World War III, Homer returns home to his family, none the wiser about his near-catastrophic adventure. The episode wraps up with Homer being reinstated at the power plant after Mr. Burns learns of his naval exploits, proving once again that Springfield's favorite bumbling dad always lands on his feet.
