Everyone loves superheroes. They swoop out of the sky and save the day. This city’s in thrall to them: we buy their toys, watch their movies, read their fawning headlines. But if you knew just half of what supes get up to, you’d think again. That’s where Butcher comes in. He’s here to spank those supes when they get out of line. And he won’t rest until he’s done with each and every one of them.

In "The Boys" Season 1, Episode 2, things pick up with Hughie still reeling from the trauma of losing his girlfriend Robin. Billy Butcher convinces him to plant a bug in the Seven's headquarters, Vought International, as part of their plan to take down the corrupt superheroes. Hughie manages to plant the bug during a visit under the guise of signing a non-disclosure agreement. Meanwhile, Annie January, also known as Starlight, struggles with the realities of her new job as a member of the Seven. After being forced into a compromising situation by The Deep in the first episode, she is shaken but determined to prove herself. During a mission with Queen Maeve, Annie saves a girl from being assaulted, earning some public goodwill despite getting reprimanded for going off-script. The episode culminates in a confrontation between A-Train and Popclaw, who are secretly dating against Vought's rules. A-Train's involvement in Robin's death is hinted at when he nervously deflects Popclaw’s questions about his whereabouts that night. Meanwhile, Translucent, who had been spying on Hughie and Butcher, is captured by them and trapped in an electrified cage. The episode ends with Hughie making a fateful decision to blow up Translucent with an explosive device Butcher gives him, marking his full entry into the morally grey world of taking on superheroes.
